Sizzling Gen-Y Startups: Origami Audio?

Do you remember that one kid in grade school who folded paper and magically it turned into a swan, a boat, or in my case a Chinese star? I never would have thought those juvenile talents could have turned into something big until I met 20 something entrepreneur Jason Lucash from a fascinating new start-up, OrigAudio (pronounced o•rig•audio). So, what is OrigAudio you ask? The website describes it as an “eco-friendly, foldable, self powered speaker. Use them for travel, the beach, your office, camping, dorm life and everywhere else!” Jason simply put it to me like this:
“Have you ever eaten Chinese food? Well, imagine a speaker built in to one of those white take out containers.”
My curiosity was peaked and I was most interested in learning how the heck he came up with this concept. Jason said he just happened to be in collaboration with a speaker manufacturer and was looking for a cheap, eco-friendly speaker to take on the go and with-in a few weeks, they shipped him a prototype. The rest is history.
Jason asked if I would like to test them out and you know it would be incredibly rude for me to refuse someone the right to give! He dropped a pair in the mail and with 2 days, I was testing out my new pair of OrigAudio speakers.
These speakers can fold and unfold in a matter of seconds for easy transportability. You may not be bumping like the neighborhood 17-year old riding in a 94′ Honda Civic with 2 x 12’s rattling in the trunk, but you can entertain a small crowd. These speakers are perfect for travel, dorm rooms, picnics, keg races, the beach, camping, or anywhere on the go.
Since OrigAudio speakers retail for $16, so you don’t have to worry about high end equipment getting ruined when you take it places. They are made out of cardboard and are completely customizable. I see these great for gifts, and giveaways with your company logo plastered on the side.

The coolest part of all, is that fact that these speakers are eco-friendly, made from recycled materials. You don’t have to worry about burning through extra batteries either. These speakers are powered right through the headphone from your favorite audio source, whether it be your Ipod, or MacBook (can you see the Mac bias).
OrigAudio is a fun and innovative way that can change the way listen to music. This is a company that has a lot of potential in the realm of social media, where everything revolves around user generated content. These new socially responsible, user generated speakers are proof that a simple innovation can go a long way.
