What Can You Do Better Than Anyone in the Entire World?
There is so much competition, right? So why the heck would someone want to business with YOU? The harsh reality is that no one cares what you have to offer. People care that you care. So again, why should someone do business with you?
You are not alone if you can’t answer this question. It can be difficult pinpointing what truly makes our businesses unique. I want to position you with a question that helped me get some clarity…
What can you or your company do better than anyone in the entire world?
Sound generic? Well, not quite. Right now you may be wearing multiple hats, and be wrestling with several niches or whatever you want to call it. But, you will always be mediocre until you figure out what do you do better than everyone else. Also think about what things will you never be the best at. Those are some areas you can look at eliminating in your business.
You’ve been on Facebook for a few years. You “get” Twitter. But you’ve avoided LinkedIn. Just for older professionals? Only full of recruiters and people looking for work? Don’t see any value? You’re not alone. Many people young and old are still confused over LinkedIn.
I have heard the term “self-made millionaire” thrown around ever since I was a little kid. I always thought it sounded so cool. The dream of being able to say, “I accomplished all this success in my life all by myself when everyone doubted me,” felt quite powerful. Many people on Twitter give themselves this title, which is what sparked this post.
In college, my instructors told me networking was the key to success. In business, my mentors told me “your network equals your net worth.” To be honest with you, until recently, I did not enjoy going to business networking events. It was because I was so sick of giving people the same old sales pitch. I just could not get past seeing every person I met as a dollar sign instead of their true unique value. Once I truly understood that this is not a game of just shaking hands, but building relationships, I started having a blast.
Your mom told you in high school, “Billy down the street is bad news. I don’t want you hanging around with him.” My response to this one was “Ma, you don’t even know him.” My parents didn’t even want to hear me complaining when I had to explain cleaning desks in
Jet ski’s, a tornado protruding from the sky, kids covering me in wet sand, barbecues and family fun. The 4th of July weekend lives up to it’s promises once again. We have made the near four hour family excursion to my families lake house countless times for many occasions. And history could not have repeated itself more perfect when my Dad said “we better hit the road early because we’re going to hit the holiday traffic.”
Do you ever feel like you have so much to do and you never get anything done? Often people approach me diagnosing their challenge being a lack of discipline. There are days in my life where I just want to go play in the park all day with my dog enjoying the summer sun! But by getting into a deeper conversation with them, I usually find out that they have no idea where they are going.
